UPS will offer an early retirement package to drivers as it looks to cull 20,000 workers amid slower parcel growth.
Let me start off with this. After reading this one paragraph which is a blatant lie and correct this. “Teamster contracts enable UPS drivers employed 30 years or more to receive employer-paid health care throughout retirement, a benefit that would not be guaranteed to all workers under UPS’s severance plan, according to the union.”
NOW the facts are this. WE as Teamster members MUST pay for our retirement insurance monthly. This cost is based on your age at retirement. This doesn’t even include eye care. The retirement is ONLY let me repeat ONLY for YOU and your SPOUSE. So if you have kids under the age of 26 or even younger the are NOT covered. Again THEY ARE NOT COVERED. This has been the normal for the 33 years as an employee of Ups and Union member. Thanks Temasters for never correcting this and making myself and my family feel valued or secured.
I’m a veteran 36yr UPS teamster in Chicago. When we retire we get full insurance. Medical, dental, & vision. This includes any eligible dependent until age 26. As long as we have 25yrs of full time service & 50yrs of age, we are eligible to retire from our local union. I understand every local has different rules and policies. I don’t understand how a company buyout violates the contract? If the work is not there, and the company isn’t diverting work to any company or subcontractor, they can simply lay off. Offering eligible employees a buyout to retire, instead of laying off union members, is a better option for employees & our union imo.
