For years, electronic logging devices (ELD) were treated as little more than compliance tools, recording hours of service to satisfy regulators. ELDs are no longer just boxes to check, they are a part of a bigger tech evolution in the supply chain.  At their core, ELDs collect a steady stream of information: engine diagnostics, GPS…

Just to be clear the regulation restricts how much Gps can be captured. Only once an hour while vehicle in motion and only at particular events and each duty status change. That is not sufficient to create decision process indicated in article. The Vehicle ECM data is also limited in the ELD. All this can only be gotten in a fleet telematics system that the ELD may be an application under. Addition the regulation does not require communication although many have implemented with communications.
