Dragon in the Cab: How China Quietly Embedded Itself in American Trucking

Originally published at: Dragon in the Cab: How China Quietly Embedded Itself in American Trucking - FreightWaves

Congress is scrambling to block Chinese purchases of farmland near bases. But nobody is systematically vetting who climbs into the cab to haul freight to and from military installations. Given everything we now know, shouldn’t we at least ask the question?

Yall need to stop repeating the lie that there is a shortage of drivers. That is a bold face lie. There are too many drivers, otherwise freight rates would be much higher. Too many drivers = cheap rates. That is basic math. Stop repeating the lie of a shortage of drivers. You should fire every employee you have that writes an article that references the lie.

Freight waves has a lot of activist writes. They flip-flop on positions.
One thing is for sure. Never, ever trust the ATA. They have never been on the side of trucking.
Many of us older drivers knew we didn’t have a driver shortage. We have an overabundance of foreign-based brokers and trucking companies chasing freight for too many foreign drivers. Driving the cost of freight down.
Then to make things worse American bases companies hired these foreign drivers thinking cheaper drivers would save them from cheap freight. We see how well that went.
As of the first of this year I’m seeing freight costs getting better for me. Cheap and heavy loads went from $750 to $950. This will, hopefully, keep trending up. I seldom haul the chap and heavy loads. There’s just no money in it.but the load boards are looking better than they have in some time.

The article makes some valid points, but in fact most military bases require drivers to pass a NCIC background check before allowing them entrance. So foreign nationals, especially illegal foreign nationals are not allowed entrance. I know this because I had to ■■■■ to another carrier’s trailer to deliver his load inside a base. And no, they didn’t tell me why he wasn’t allowed.

The author raises many salient points that require more in-depth research and action. Shipment security both physical and Cyber need to be a priority with all parties across the Department of Defense(or War) supply chain.

Why is the ban on purchasing farmland here just within so many miles of a military base? It should be no person who isn’t a legal resident of the United States is allowed to buy any land.
