Secretary Duffy has moved beyond funding threats. He’s now openly discussing pulling California’s ability to issue commercial driver’s licenses to anyone, a move that would effectively ground 700,000 CDL holders and create supply chain chaos that would make the 2021 port backups look like a minor inconvenience.
It’s time to stop talking. Stop with the threats and promises. The requirement was stated, Ca did not comply (and continued to lie about it), strike hard. I’m tired of the half hearted escalation this administration has continued taking part in. The CDL issue, Minnesota, Iran…all of it. If you say you’re going to do something when a certain line is crossed, do it. Liberals, marxists, islamists…all the same, like little kids…if you say you’re gonna do something as the parent, you better do it or you lose credibility. You gotta give the kids a kick in the ■■■ sometimes to get their attention. Do it already
I just don’t understand California’s problem here, do exactly what the lawsuit asks for, kill the 17,000 + improper licenses and then let those who are saying that this isn’t a problem on their end reapply immediately. The all California has to do is reissue the ones that should be driving and waive any fees for those licenses.
Also I just have a feeling that Newsome is trying to hold out until midterms.
Fascinating article, and you partially lost me at the end with the stats about Cali and Texas. If they’re accurate, what are federal regulations or CDLs for? What does regulatory compliance get us? I certainly agree that Cali should comply with Duffy’s demands and with regulations in general, but some fundamental questions should be asked if states that flout regulations are safer than ones that don’t.
This would not be the smartest idea of the administration that cares about affordability. Let’s say they strike down all California CDL licenses. California ships a large percentage of the country’s food. What this would do is create a food shortage in 49 states (vehicles from other states could still come into California).
In a year when affordability is a big issue - does the Federal Government want to shut down a major part of their food supply and spike prices in the other 49 states? I don’t think they’ll do that, or if they do, once sticker shock hits, they will reverse course.
I suppose you could do that - I think the other 49 states might not be happy with the food shortages that go along with stopping transportation outside of California. California grows a big chunk of the Nation’s food. Do you think President Trump is going to want to raise food costs in the mid-terms?
